Parrot in the Oven

Victor Martinez made the book “Parrot in the Oven.” But this day I took the liberty to read it. It start in the southern United States. The conflict is that Manny joins a gang. This is so he can kiss a girl. Soon he wants out of the gang when they rob a store. He learns that being in a gang isn’t as cool as he thought he could be. In all of thisĀ  he is abused by the gang. Therefore the theme is that abuse can only make you stronger.

Now we talk about the main body of the essay. One of the most obvious terms of abuse is near the beginning. Manny gets slapped in the face by his father. Also later his father takes twenty dollars right out of his pocket. His father is an alcoholic and took the money to go to Rico’s Pool Hall. In the middle of the book it said that he was bullied by his classmates. It shows him in the hall when two kids come up to him and ask him if they could get into Rico’s Pool Hall. When he says no he asks him about his sister. They ask if they can go out with her. When he says no one of the guys punches him in the face and stomach. Then at the end he gets beat up by a gang, This is so he can get in, then they rob a store. But Manny gets out of it uncharged. When he gets home he is a changed person. This is because he saw what the real world is like. So now he has been changed by the world and everyone that has abused him.

There are a lot of comparisons in this book. One of the most obvious one is when it said “Stabbing her hands in the air like a belly dancer.” this is saying that she was slashing her hand in the air but, slowly. Then there was when the summer came . It said “that summer was a scorcher.” this is saying how hot it was during that summer. There are many more. Like in the middle of the book. It said “waving my hand like it weighed a ton.” this was saying how guilty he was. Those are just a couple. But there are a lot of comparisons.

There is a lot of different word choice in this book that make it look and sound different from others. For example, in the book it say things like “she had about a million freckles.” This is saying that she has a lot of freckles. Yes, this paragraph is all about word choice. There is a lot of it. Like “she had enough wire to run a toy” they were talking about a girl with braces. Then, in the middle of the book it said “finish first” which is alliteration. Also at the end it said “she could make Santa grumble.” First, this is a hyperbole. Lastly, this is saying that she is always grumpy.

this is one of the last paragraphs. Can you guess what it’s about? Yep that’s right details. Those little things that describe everything in the book. Now we will be talking about the little details that make the book. There are many such as “ready to boil over.” Now I know this should be long in the last but it works here. But this is saying how mad she really is. There is a lot more.

In conclusion, this is the proof that proves my theme. This makes one of the themes, getting hurt can only make you stronger. This is important saying you can get stronger from mistakes and getting hurt. There is your proof, Good day.
